Arthur A. Benson earned his PhD in chemistry at Caltech in 1942. He is known for his work on the pathway in photosynthesis used to make sugars out of carbon dioxide, water and sunlight known as the Benson-Calvin cycle (also known as the Calvin cycle or the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle).
