World War I commemorative medal
Obverse is relief portrait of four men: Cardinal Mercier, A. D. Max, L. Theodor, H. Pirenne. Inscription includes their names and motto “Tenir.” Reverse has defiant male figure with sledge hammer and other tools, with inscription: “L’Allemagne retablit l’esclavage, 15 Mai 1916 [Germany reestablishes slavery]. Has maker’s name, G. Devreese, and date 1923.
