Biographical/Historical

Background: Became Caltech Professor of Economics in 1968. Davis became the Harkness Professor of Social Science in 1980 and served as executive officer for the social sciences from 1982 to 1985. He retired in 2005.

Biographical/Historical

Description: Lance E. Davis was born in Seattle and attended the University of Washington, where he received a BA in economics. He completed his PhD in economics at Johns Hopkins in 1956, after serving in the navy during the Korean War. He taught at Purdue University from 1955 to 1968, when he arrived at Caltech, where he stayed for the remainder of his career. His principle work had been the study of financial institutions.
