Background: Caltech Professor of Geology, 1936-1960; Research Associate in Geology, 1960-1970; Chief of the California Division of Mines and Geology and State Geologist, 1959-1969.
Biographical/Historical
Description: In addition to teaching at Caltech, Campbell was a consulting economic geologist to oil, mining, and utility companies and became one of the country's foremost authorities on nonmetallic deposits. In 1937, he and Caltech alumnus John Maxson organized and led a boat trip down the Colorado River to study pre-Cambrian rocks of the Grand Canyon.
