Biographical/Historical

Description: John Buwalda came to Caltech in 1926 to organize the Division of Geological Sciences. He assembled the staff, worked out the instruction and research programs in geology, paleontology, and geophysics, and supervised the design and construction of the Charles Arms and Seeley W. Mudd Laboratories on campus. In addition to teaching, he had a distinguished career as a consulting geologist.

John Buwalda's papers include documents on Geology division matters including hiring, finances and field trips; research and field notes; Buwalda's service on the board of expert advisers for the National Park Service and as a consultant for the U. S. Geological Survey; correspondence; biographical material and photographs. His papers are combined with those of his wife, Imra Wann Buwalda. Collection size: 11 boxes, 5 linear ft.
