Biographical/Historical
Description: Thoms Ahrens was born in Frankfurt, Germany on April 25, 1936. He earned his undergraduate degree from MIT in 1957, a master's from Caltech in 1958, and a PhD from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in 1962. He came to Caltech in 1967 after 5 years with Pan American Petroleum Corp, the US Army, and Stanford Research Institute. Ahrens's field of research was in the use of shock waves to study minerals under high temperatures and pressures, specifically to obtain geological information on the nature of the Earth's core.
