Background: Caltech Professor of Mathematics, 1959-1981; Executive Officer of the Mathematics Division, 1966-1969.


Description: An internationally known mathematician, Hall worked extensively in combinatorial analysis (the study of the arrangement of objects) and group theory (in particular, finite simple groups) and discovered important relationships between the two fields. He is also know for his research in number theory and projective geometry.
