Duwez, Pol Edgard (Applied Physicist)
- Existence: 1907 - 1984
Background: Caltech Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science, 1947-1978; Research Engineer, Caltech, 1942-1947.
Description: Duwez was an expert in the field of metals and materials. His research concerned a wide range of solid-state phenomena including plastic deformation and wave propagation, heat transfer and transpiration cooling, powder metallurgy, stable and metastable alloy systems, high-temperature alloys and ceramic materials, magnetic and superconducting phases, and the discovery of metallic glasses by novel quenching from the liquid state.
Collection Notes: Oral History, 1982. This 72 page oral history covers Duwez's family background and childhood in Belgium, postdoctoral study at Caltech, wartime research and service, and his teaching and research at Caltech.
