Background: Caltech Professor of Geophysics, 1948-1973; Caltech alumnus (BS, 1927).

Biographical/Historical

Description: C. Hewitt Dix taught mathematics at Rice for three years after receiving his PhD there. He then worked in industry for several years as a research geophysicist and seismologist. In 1948 he joined the Caltech faculty in geophysics. His research at the Institute was chiefly concerned with investigations of theoretical aspects of the propagation of seismic waves.

Collection Notes: Papers, ca. 1930-ca. 1970. Topics covered in Dix's papers include California seismology, quadratic transformations and Texas seismology. Also included are manuscripts, notes, articles, class notes, correspondence and reprints.
